    Little did this lady realise I am sure, that her newspaper insulation, furniture and quilts would so perfectly frame her in history as a statement of her 'time'. A perfect sociological photo.

    I remember being in the "cabin" on the edge of the "colored quarters" our small Louisiana town of our then housekeeper & babysitter, Mary & her husband George Jackson. (Mary was from Georgia, coudn't read/write) say around 1950, I was four. They had one large room, two beds with quilts, newspaper on walls just as in this photo. I remember going there at Christmas, we did every year with a box of groceries and gifts, it was cold and they had a wood burning iron stove in the middle of the room with a stovepipe up through the ceiling. I'll never forget that couple and their kind regard toward us.
