The above image is not really a very good representation of the photograph. It has been over-sharpened, and the colors are not accurate. The coat of the young man in the center, for example, comes out as green when you process the shot, yet here it is grey; in effect, it has been de-saturated. I would ask the Library too, whether it has considered re-scanning the glass plates. They were scanned a long time ago now, and at only 1000dpi; I think rescanning at 2400 would reveal even more detail, and would make the process of aligning the plates easier. www.flickr.com/photos/theonemacduff/7175005104/in/album-7...

It's true that the alignment, the balance of the color layers, and corrections for warping and subject movement can have an impact on the outcome. Phil (LOC P&P) Wow. I never expected a response. Thanks! And sorry to hear that there are no imminent plans; but perhaps in the future..... People forget that while 19th and early 20th century photography was cumbersome and primitive, by current standards, lenses, by contrast, had already undergone a couple of centuries of development, thus, the detail possibly captured by old photographs is often astonishing, as good as, or better than current digital efforts. Speed Graflex images, for example, if scanned at even 1500dpi, can easily yield a detailed, 40 megapixel image. And as with Prokudin-Gorskii, I'm willing to bet that more detail yet can be recovered from such images by scanning in the 4800dpi range. Just my opinion, of course.....

Keany is not a common name - the 1911 census shows only 3 people named Keany in County Dublin. Christopher Keany, 27, was an agricultural labourer, he and wife Alice are not a likely fit for this leafy suburb. I like Michael Keany, then 21, Electrical Engineer. He would be 52 in 1942.

That Michael Keany is from Sligo - there are 67 Keanys in the 1911 census in Sligo.
