Museums of History NSW - State Archives Collection Thanks for the large size of this - a great help in studying the veggie patch! For anyone who does not already know, this is Newcastle East in c.1883 looking SE from the first floor verandah of Claremont House in Newcommen Street. Part of a Panorama (in the process of being discovered) possibly photographed by John Rae. Full details are over on the blog - archivesoutside.records.nsw.gov.au/can-you-date-this-phot... and on this photo (to the left but not quite joining) -
So far we know the date range - late 1882 (due to the Sailors Home) to 1884 (new Hospital wing), but have yet to prove it is a panorama taken at the same time as the other, and that John Rae is the photographer, trying to match his earlier 1849 painting. (I think he gave up because new buildings were in the way, and went up the hill behind to take it from Jesmond House.) -

There is a Warehouse across Scott Street from Waratah Terrace which is at a similar stage of construction in both panoramas. See first photo comments. I would suggest that the veggie patch (see note) in the Barracks / Lunatic Asylum is in the same state of layout and growth in both panoramas. Which helps suggest that the panoramas are contemporary, possibly within hours or at most days of each other.
