  If this is 5x4 inches, does that mean it is a contact print? Interesting shot from a large format camera, if so...

  Thank you for your question, monkeyfinger. According to the photo archivist for the State Archives of Florida, when the prints of that time period (1940s) came to the Archives from the Department of Commerce they were mounted on a card with information about each photo. The original negatives were 4x5, and the contact print was made directly from the negative. Hope that helps.

  Mildred Douglas was born in 1895 therefore this photo probably was taken in 1915.

  I read the bio - and added a tag, "mule." This doesn't appear to be a horse, folks. Mules are smart and long on endurance.

  It is a horse- Just because it is ugly doesn't make it a mule. It's ears are too small to be a mule

  It's a horse. This horse is a descendant of the horses that the Spanish brought over and is typically called a "cayouse," after the native tribe that used them. Look at some of Remington's works and you will see that most of the Indian and cow ponys of that time were like this pony. A tough breed and hard worker.

  This is definitely not a mule -- the tag should be removed. It's a horse that's not especially attractive, but not necessarily a cayuse either -- just a good, sturdy horse of mixed breed, apparently roan in color. Frankly as long as the "mule" tag is removed the breed doesn't much matter.
