We're right at the junction with Shop St. to the left, St. Mary's Bridge to the right. Google Streetview shows the quayside quite changed, but the roofline to the left is still similar. The GeoHive OS 25" shows the Hotel to the left, survey date June 1907.

National Library of Ireland on The Commons I'd agree that it is the "Kyne" and the next one down has three letters visible "S or GIF?". What a beauty of a shot, for those of us who know the place it has changed very little but look at those ships??? Fantastic detail and imagery. They are all moored about 10 to 15 feet from the quay wall, obviously because the bottom sloped up rapidly, and there is a plank across that considerable gap. Talk about walking the plank. You will also note that each ship has a dinghy beside the gangway for the less than nimble to come and go? Look at the length of that roofers ladder on the left? Imagine carrying that around on your shoulder or on your bicycle as they used to do? Brilliant shot Carol, well done. Did you take it yourself?

The symmetrey in this photo is spectacular. That wall would not have been very conducive to cargo handling. I wonder if that was a holding area for the ships between voyages?

Micheál Cattigan Thats a good point given the distance they are from the wall as well. There is also a lack of space for manoeuvreing drays etc. on the quayside. You can see another ship in the background either getting ready to dock or to leave and judging by the tiny bow wave the tide is flowing so it may be leaving. It is possible that there was a small jetty or dock over on the Scotch Hall side where actual unloading was done, unless of course these were passenger ships taking emigrants to far away places? The 1860's were a time of mass emigration from Ireland and all of the ports were handling such ships.

The chap nearest the camera is wearing a bowler hat but they were invented in 1844 so that is no help to us date wise!

In the archive, a rear view of todays bus, IM 180, at Leenane. On the back is painted Tourist Car Clifden Westport, so I imagine they are going to Clifden via Leenane.

to a modern eye the piles of horse manure are more numerous than expected. So neatly gathered for collection, the chicken seems to be getting a god feed of grubs/flies.

Both IM 180 and IM 181, along with IM 179 are in the 1915 Irish Motor Book as being Char-a-bancs owned by Midland G.W. Railway, Broadstone.

Firstly, welcome back Carol - our lives were so much duller without your presence and posts! Secondly when I was growing up in Limerick this was more or less the centre of activity because (a) I lived not too far away and (b) my father worked on the railway. This scene had not changed much when I was growing up and I can remember some jarveys parked along that fence line though there was a line of taxis nearby as well. Those gates were still there right up to the 1960's if I remember right and the station building was and remains more or less the same. In our time the bus terminal for the country linking the trains with the outlying areas and towns not served by the railway were up there to the right of the shot and I remember the green single deckers with the luggage on the rack on the roof leaving there down through the years. Ah, them was the days!!! This was probably taken from the Railway Hotel which was directly across the street from the station?

I should mention that this is right in the heart of "Cookie" country, just up to the right was Careys Road and the Young Munster rugby club was centred in that area. The club which is 120+ years old was drawn from local workers and craftsmen and the name was cocking a snoop at those elitist clubs like the Old Belvederes, Old Wesleys etc.

What a contrast between the extravagant hats of the ladies and the caps of the urchins standing right next to them.
