Born enslaved to a Missouri family in 1859, Charles S. L. Baker was a self-taught engineer and later attended Franklin College after the Civil War ended. He invented and patented a radiator that heats up with friction, after experimenting for over 20 years with metals and other materials. He was known as the "King of Clean Energy" because the friction heater could use different types of power (wind, water, or gasoline).
