Former President Theodore Roosevelt stands on the deck of the steamship Aidan, in New York harbor, on May 19, 1914. The ship had docked minutes earlier, after returning Roosevelt from an eight-month ordeal in South America where, with his son Kermit and others, he had explored a hitherto unknown river through the Amazon jungle -- called "The River of Doubt," but afterwards named "Rio Roosevelt." The harrowing adventure was told recently in the bestselling book "The River of Doubt," (2006) by Candice Millard. Another Bain/LOC portrait of T. Another angle: Here embarking on his voyage to Brazil, for a 1913-1914 expedition to explore the Brazilian jungle -- and eventually as well the 1,000KM "River of Doubt" (renamed the "Rio Roosevelt" following his triumphant return to civilization from the brink of death, after barely surviving a serious leg infection and malaria in the jungle, where he was surrounded by furtive, murderous aborigines, and rivers teeming with piranha).

Roosevelt High School in Yonkers was named for the former President, and a photo of him appears on its webpage.
