Þingvellir.--The Murderesses' Pool.

An intriguing name for a small body of water. I am curious as to its origin.

There is some misunderstanding here. You have two separate locations. Skötutjörn and what you call "murderesses pool". You can see both on this map: www.thingvellir.is/thjonusta/goenguleidir/ What you call "murderesses pool" is Drekkingarhylur. That means "The drowning pool". It does NOT mean "murderesses pool". 18 women were drowned there, the last one in 1739. They were killed mostly for two crimes: incest or secretly having a child and then leaving it out to die. Calling it "murderesses pool" presumes guilt, which some of them almost certainly were not. This image is of that location. Skötutjörn means "ray fish pool" - it's in a different place. It's called that because of a folktale about a landowner who fished more than he needed, ending with a devilish seven tailed ray-fish in his net. No fish has been fished out of that pond since then. or so the tale goes.
