Still flooding at Ipswich.

pellethepoet These are amazing photographs. Do you know from where these photos were taken? It would be great to identify the public buildings.

State Library of Queensland I don't know Ipswich but I'm sure we can find out. I happened to be revisiting my favourites in the new "justified" viewing format that Flickr have rolled out, and I noticed these two photos were two halves of the same scene - which I didn't notice at the time you posted them. I think it would be useful to reference the associated photos in your catalogue descriptions for these items.

I bet there will be more panels, especially with the portrait aspect. Watching with interest.

i wish i was born in the 1910s and witnessed this orphans going to coney island in autos and have this photos as one of my souveneirs. 'great photos'...

Just like another LOC photo, this was taken on the north side of New York City's Union Square, on East 17th Street to be specific. In fact, I've found a modern photo on flickr (not mine, btw) whose scope and angle closely matches this one! It seems that all of the buildings on Union Square East in this photo--save for the very tall one on the right--are gone, but that many (maybe all) of the ones behind them are still around.

This was the seventh annual auto excursion of Brooklyn orphans to Coney Island, sponsored by volunteer drivers from the Automobile Club, according to this NYT story: query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?_r=1&res=9E04E...

I wondered why they were flicking the dust onto the books carefully laid on the ground, but now I see that they are using a type of vacuum device with a brush head.

We can see the hose attached to the head, and extending behind the men at right.

I seldom see dust in libraries. Is that mainly because of ventilation systems? Or do they still literally dust the shelves?

This image has been used in Rob Ketcherside's indicommons.org 'Across the Commons' post Clean Up Yer Mess. (When I worked in libraries, we read the shelves, but I don't think we every dusted them.)
