The Manager's and Superintendent's camp, Mount Isa Mines Limited. This was located in what become known as Mile's Area for Mine Manager's Reports. The suburb opposite is known as Miles End. This camp's location is approximately west of the Barkly Hotel. E. Saint Smith is standing on the left. This was relocated to Mineside in 1925. The rock outcrop over the top of the tin shed is Campbell Miles' "Mount Isa" lease. Caption read: Superintendent Saint Smith and Managers Camp and Store Mt Isa Mines Ltd R Burness Photo.

Miners drilling underground in Mount Isa, ca. 1954

  • Barry Merrick said:
Air leg drilling. A pneumatic cylinder was attached to the drill and its end was secured to the floor by a claw like end. As the drilling progressed the air leg would maintain pressure on the drill and also hold the weight of the drill. Prior using the air legs It was physically tiring for the miner to hold up the heavy drill as well as pushing pressure onto it.
