    Leach Cross (b. 1886) was known as "the fighting dentist." He was indeed a dentist, born Louis Wallach in an Orthodox Jewish immigrant family on the Lower East Side. He won forty-three fights and fought five champions to draws. See Ellis Island to Ebbets Field: Sport and the American Jewish Experience by Peter Levine (Oxford University Press 1992).
