I liked this picture because she has this aura of importance in it. She seemed like she was a "somebody". After searching her name I found out that she was a member of the Colony Club, an organization that was comprised of some of New York's brightest women.

In 1913, on his second visit to America (the first was in 1893), his Imperial Highness visited Philadelphia, Newport RI, and New York City. In New York, the Grand Duke stayed at the Ritz-Carlton hotel. One of several photos that Bain took there is dated September 6, 1913. After his departure for Russia, the New York Times (on October 5, 1913) ran a story about the unpretentious royal visitor, and included a story about a famous joke that Alex had played on the press in 1893: query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9406EEDF1E3BE633A...

During his visit to Newport, Rhode Island in 1913, His Imperial Highness, The Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich of Russia (1866-1933), was struck by the beauty of American women. According to published reports, The Grand Duke "collected photographs of the women he met in Newport, especially at The Casino and Bailey's Beach."
The Grand Duke was particularity smitten by Miss Marie Tailer of New York City, who was visiting Newport at that time, and he was "anxious to obtain a photograph of her". He declared that Miss Tailer was "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World". [1]
This pronouncement was picked up by newspapers across the country (if not the world), and photos of Miss Tailer were published for some years afterwards -- always with the "Most Beautiful Girl in the World" moniker in the caption. [2]
Marie Tailer was engaged in 1914, and married in 1915, to Mr. S. Bryce Wing. A photo of her is included in the LOC Bain Collection on Flickr -- however IMNHO there are more flattering photos of her in The (San Francisco) Call and The (Georgia) Evening Ledger.
