  Although later in life she wore other couture on the stage and in life, Melba usually wore clothes by Worth. Her teacher Mathilde Marchesi had impressed on her the importance of good clothes. Englishman Charles Frederick Worth is generally considered the first couture designer and he established his premises in Paris in the mid-1850's Reference; Melba, the voice of Australia / by Thérèse Radic.
