"Dame Nellie Melba GBE (19 May 1861 – 23 February 1931), born Helen Porter Mitchell, was an Australian operatic soprano. She became one of the most famous singers of the late Victorian era and the early 20th century. She was the first Australian to achieve international recognition as a classical musician. She took the pseudonym "Melba" from Melbourne, her home town." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nellie_Melba

This may be an earlier picture used on 10/9/25, or was taken in connection with a story of that date: "MELBA MAY ENTER POLITICS; Prima Donna, 64, to Return to Australia Upon Her Retirement." query.nytimes.com/mem/archive/pdf?res=9B07E6D61E38E233A25...

The photo on the table is of her father, David Mitchell. See slide-show with three pictures in the middle of the page at coombeyarravalley.com.au/our-story and a book cover for a biography at www.nelliemelbamuseum.com.au/merchandise.htm More about him is at adb.anu.edu.au/biography/mitchell-david-4209

Thanks Art Siegel for identifying her. We'll add her full name to this record and the other Bain photo of her. Good eye swanq. We'll mention her father's photo in the photo description also.
