New York District Attorney Lewis Smith lead the prosecution in the trial against Florence Carman

Defense attorney George Levy makes a statement for Mrs. carman:

However, this photo is before the trial which was held in October, 1914, either at the coroner's inquest or the grand jury proceeding at which Mrs. Carman was indicted.

Based on date of 7/7/14 which is written on the negative, it would appear that this image of District Attorney Lewis Smith was taken before the trial of Mrs. Edwin Carman for the murder of Lulu Bailey.

Thanks Wystan. According the New York Times (Oct. 21, 1914 and July 9, 1914), Lewis J. Smith was the district attorney in the Carman murder trial and Charles R. Weeks was the assistant district attorney. We will add these details when we update the database.
