Richard Norton It's not clear to me that these photos were taken at the Monmouth Park Racetrack. The Wikipedia entry indicates the Long Branch track had gone out of business in 1894. This entry en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monmouth_County_Horse_Show indicates the show changed venues over the years. The track in Long Branch where the show took place in 1917 was known as Hollywood Park. books.google.com/books?id=lE85AQAAMAAJ&lpg=PA156&...

LOC , this appears to be miscataloged as 4289 when the negative says 4288.

It was Governor's Day at the continuation of the Monmouth County Horse Show on the Hollywood Grounds this afternoon and the entry of the Chief Executive of the State, James F. technogeo, you make a good point about the perspective. Like some of the others of the Long Branch Horse show there are taken from well behind the action and what to other photographers would be the main subject. Here for example, the main thing is the central reviewing or judgeing stand and the scoreboard - but they are mere background to the general crowd scene.
