William Pettigrew (1825-1906) was a sawmiller, politician, and diarist. Born near Ayr, Scotland, he emigrated to Australia in 1848, arriving in Moreton Bay in 1849. From 1849 to 1899 he kept diaries that provide a fascinating insight into life in colonial Queensland. The diaries are now in the care of the Royal Historical Society of Queensland. Perhaps this young chap went off to the States to make his fortune, and sent a photo home?? That's not to say that he couldn't be a stay at home fashion plate, but there's just something about this photo...

Came across the name Piper reading The Story of the Wellington Foundry Lincoln. A William Piper purchased a Showman's steam engine built 1912. Also see link for Fredrick Piper www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Mallow/Wil... .Prehaps its a publicity shot.
