Interesting to see the man with the telescope on the tripod. I'm used to seeing a section in newspapers of this period (and much earlier) entitled 'Shipping Intelligence' . As well as news of arrivals and departures there are entries such as (Morning Post, London, April 2nd 1885)

Presumably it was this man who spotted passing ships and passed the news to Lloyds of London, who supplied the information to newspapers. -
