William Cox Redfield (1858–1932) served as a Democratic Representative from New York in the U.S. Congress, 1911–1913. He was the first U.S. Secretary of Commerce, installed as head the newly-created department by President Woodrow Wilson in 1913. He held the position until his resignation late in 1919. Josephus Daniels (1862–1948) was Secretary of the Navy during the Wilson administration. The North Carolina Democrat and long-time publisher of the Raleigh News & Observer also served as Ambassador to Mexico during the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
