    Scottish coastal rower here. We row with a crew of four and in our club the bow and stroke (stern) oars are shorter than the others in some of our sets. I imagine the boat these chaps rowed was very similar to our skiffs, which are based on a traditional Fair Isle design. www.flickr.com/photos/hockadilly/23428062580/

    It's Maher in the written caption, not Mahler. Daniel Aloysius Maher (1881-1916) was an American jockey who worked in the UK from 1908-1913, before he died at age 35 from tuberculosis. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_A._Maher
