trophies

I'm taking a gamble here but I think that the trophy on the left as you face it is the Metropolitan Cup for coxed fours from the Dublin Metropolitan Regatta. This is one of the most prestigious trophies in Irish rowing and is also known as "The Blue Riband". It was also recognised as the unofficial fours championship of Ireland. I will send a link to someone in the rowing fraternity and see if they can identify it. If that is the cup, or 'pot' as they are known, the the names of the crew are likely to be inscribed on it. As far as I know Waterford Boat Club are still active and they had a great selection of old photos on display in their clubhouse so they may have the record also? Lets see how we get on?

Tammybeck, how could you;-) A bit like cycling, when sitting on the sliding seat in the boats, having seams across your backside could be very painful over time. When I was rowing there was a special seat in the shorts and today with spandex etc. there are no seams. I suspect that the absence of underwear was to minimise discomfort.

W.B.C. Waterford Boat Club ?

There is a 'similar item' with at least some of these outstanding characters looking very stripey in their boat - catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000589993 And these photos of WBC members from 1901 - www.askaboutireland.ie/aai-files/assets/libraries/waterfo... and 1903 - www.askaboutireland.ie/aai-files/assets/libraries/waterfo... (from - www.askaboutireland.ie/reading-room/sports-recreation/spo...) make me think this photo is earlier in the 1890s; the clothing, aesthetic poses, etc. Or not?

Is the one on the right a candle holder, or is it just a really weirdly shaped trophy?

I believe the young man to the left of the trophy is Cornelius Patrick "Banquo" Redmond who was cox for the W.B.C., he was also proprietor and editor of the Waterford News. He died at the age of 44 in 1907. www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia/ I would agree this is likely sometime in the 1890's.

Sharon Corbet I thought it might have been a punch bowl, but there is mention of 'rose bowls' on that Ask Ireland site (link above) - " ... L. P. Ridgeway was part of a winning Junior Fours crew in 1901. The team won many trophies and on one occasion each crew member was presented with a rose bowl. Nothing more was heard of this story until 2003, when a Reverent Ridgeway from South Africa contacted the club. This man was the son of L. P.
