I remember organ-grinders when I was a wee tad in Philadelphia. Guy came down our block, played a song, and his trained monkey went around offering his hat as a receptacle for coins. He didn't get a lot of them.

I find the Yiddish signs fascinating. In the 1930's, this language was quite extensively used.

Taken facing west along New Chambers St., at roughly the location where the current Chambers and Monroe Streets would intersect if they were extended.

Now the location of the Governor Alfred E. Smith housing projects, built in 1953.

The El is visible at about where Pearl St. becomes St. James Place.
