The woman on the left is perhaps Mrs. William Halsted Vander Poel, the former Gretchen Billings, daughter of CKG Billings (chairman of Union Carbide). CKG Billings and Frederick Johnson (apparently the husbands of the other two women) together bought some English thoroughbred horses to raise for raising in 1915.

C. K. G. Billings and Fred Johnson were partners in the ownership of race horses, including "Omar Khayyam," winner of the 1917 Kentucky Derby. This photo appears to have been taken at the stepped observation boxes of the Piping Rock Country Club, in Locust Valley, Long Island, on July 10, 1913. Here is the same scene, same day, shifted to the right:

Another Bain/LOC photo of the same venue was posted to Flickr on April 27, 2011:

Beautiful photo of young girl riding bare back on a horse.

nice photo, but she is not bare back , you can clearly see stirrups saddle flap and girth.

Harvey S. Ladew (1887 - 1976) was a noted American topiary and fox hunting enthusiast, who created the Ladew Topiary Gardens in Monkton, Maryland. You can see this horse has won a ribbon, on it's bridle.

nudecowboy: thanks for spotting the typo and providing the biographical information. We'll fix the typo and reload the description.

Lynne: thank you for finding additional information on Theodore Roosevelt Jr. We will include it in the record.

This appears to be taken at the same time and place as this photo of Roosevelt at the races at Piping Rock Country Club in Locust Valley, N.Y. which ran in the New York Sun on October 29, 1916. chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83030431/1916-10-29/ed-...
