It's interesting to note that nearly all of the photos of Sir Thomas Lipton available on the internet picture him in nautical garb. That's also the way his own tea company used to portray him in advertisements, and on its packages:

Wystan, thanks, that's very cool to see attached to the Bain photo here. Seen the boxes my whole life, never thought of "Lipton" being a real person before...

Penny, I suppose it may be a matter of exposure: my wife is British, and she loves her tea. Guess who makes it for her, several times a day . . . . Myself, I never touch the stuff. Wasn't Sir Tom a dashing yachtsman, though? Tall and athletic, with twinkling eyes.

This was the yacht that Thomas Lipton commissioned to challenge for the America Cup off New York in 1899. She was beaten by the US defender "Columbia". Lipton commisioned "Shamrock II" for his next challenge for the cup, and "Shamrock I" raced against her sister ship in the pre-race trials.

Tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton competed for the America's Cup five times. His crews never won but the races made him a well known sporting figure in America and served as excellent publicity for his tea brand.
