Shallow-draught paddle steamers and barges, were the commerce transport of choice in the shallow Darling River. The river ceased to be navigable by the 1950s. Photo of paddle-steamers lined up at Bourke carrying wool c1900, by Kerry. From Powerhouse Museum:

I punched "bourke drought nile" into Trove and instantly found two versions of this photo. - acms.sl.nsw.gov.au/item/itemDetailPaged.aspx?itemID=391635 "c.1920" cas.awm.gov.au/photograph/P02751.092 "c.1908" by Charles Bean, working for the SMH (see blurb) - Interesting!

Andy Brill Thanks AndyBrii, thats a great photo! We love the old paddlesteamers. beachcomber australia That is extremely interesting re Bean... He was a journo so that makes sense. Interestingly there are a series of SMH articles reporting on the river trade (& the discussion of a competing railway) in 1908 attibuted to the SHM's "Special Commissioner". Fabulous find!

The articles in the SMH "Wool Land, by Our Special Commisioner" started on Friday 10/9/1909 - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/15106684 , and carried on every Friday until 31/12/1909 in 17 chapters - trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/result?l-decade=190&l-titl... , should anyone want to read them. All about "real Australians", the wool industry, thinly-veiled patriotism and nationalism, heavily influenced by Rudyard Kipling [not really my cup-of-tea!]. But of great historical interest considering what Charles Bean went on to do with reporting of Gallipoli and WW1 etc.

[notes working again - phew!] I think this photo is early 1891 - the Hotel Australia is nearing completion, but the GPO clock and the Lands Department Tower are not yet there. Mr Hall seems to be where Taronga Zoo is now from the alignment of Fort Denison and Cremorne Point.
