That doesn't look like Sydney! Ireland, Scotland, Wales ... ... ? Is the photo related to the next 'Rothesay Bay' ?

beachcomber australia Hi BC, this image was part of the same donation as the ROTHESAY BAY photograph, however no clues to its origins. It was in a box with the word 'steam' written on it, not very enlightening. Looks very Scottish though IMHO...

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/51979177@N02] Not Hancocks Tower! ( www.flickr.com/photos/state-records-nsw/8746028468/ ) Ballynacarriga Castle looks similar, but different. Let's get the Irish Flickroonies on to it ...

Definitely not Welsh - the solitary tower house style looks either Scottish or possibly Irish to me. The height of the hill behind makes me favour Scottish for some reason. Not too many places in Ireland where steep hills of such a height rise close to the sea, which is where I think we are because of the signs of erosion on the lower left of the picture.

[notes working again - phew!] I think this photo is early 1891 - the Hotel Australia is nearing completion, but the GPO clock and the Lands Department Tower are not yet there. Mr Hall seems to be where Taronga Zoo is now from the alignment of Fort Denison and Cremorne Point. Arthur Streeton (whose camp was at the bottom of this hill in the early 1890s) painted the same view in - 1893 - artsearch.nga.gov.au/Detail.cfm?IRN=46512 Hi-res - www.the-athenaeum.org/art/full.php?ID=46205 1896 - www.deutscherandhackett.com/node/21000011/ (sold for $336,000 ! ) 1907 - www.ngv.vic.gov.au/col/work/3068
