The same photo was published in Aerial Age Weekly, July 19, 1915, p. 423. The photo, at the bottom of page 423, has a caption which states: "A group of enthusiasts taken at San Diego, Cal. From left to right, George Hallett, Raymund V. Morris, Katherine Stinson, Lieut. R.A.B. Sutton, Lieut. Jose Morrow, Lieut. Bown, Lieut. Walter R. Taliaferro." books.google.com/books?id=znbmAAAAMAAJ&printsec=front... There are some slight misidentifications in the Aerial Age caption of the photo - "Raymund V. Morris" is Raymond V. Morris, "Lieut. R.A.B. Sutton" is Redondo B. Sutton (who would come to later infamy in a 1920's swindling scheme), "Lieut. Jose Morrow" is Joseph C. Morrow, Jr., and "Lieut. Bown" is Thomas S. Bowen. Given the identity of those in the photo, this almost certainly was taken at the Curtiss Aviation School at North Island sometime in the first half of 1915.

Aviatrix Katherine Stinson in front of her Curtiss-Stinson Special (aka "Curtiss Special"), a single-seat variant of the Curtiss JN-4, powered by a Curtiss OXX-6 150 HP V-8 engine. Stinson flew the aircraft to raise funds for the Red Cross. On July 9, 1918, Stinson would carry a mailbag aboard this aircraft "containing 259 letters from Calgary to Edmonton in western Canada’s first air mail delivery." See: www.vintagewings.ca/VintageNews/Stories/tabid/116/article... Here's another photo of Stinson and the aircraft in the LoC Photostream:

This probably goes with the other photos of the Harkness Handicap auto race at Sheepshead Bay. "MISS STINSON HAS ENDED AIR FLIGHT New York. June 1 [1918]. Miss Katherine Stinson, leaving Binghamton at 2:45 o'clock this afternoon finished the last lap of her aerial mail carrying flight from Chicago to New York when she landed at Sheepshead Bay about five o'clock, just before the start of the Harkness handicap automobile race." chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn84031081/1918-06-02/ed-...
