This photo ran in The Sunday Oregonian. (Portland, Ore.) on July 26, 1914 with the following story: "Harold Kantner, winner of aviation contract Harold Kantner, flying in a 50-horse-power Schmitt monoplane, won the aviation contest at New York on the Fourth. Kantner's time in the 36-mile race was 43 minutes 28 1-5 seconds. The only other birdman of the eight supposed to take part in the contest who actually flew was A. S. Heinrich, who was beaten by Kantner by 3 minutes 20 3-5 seconds. The race was arranged as part of the city's "safe and sane" celebration. Photo described here: Text of handwritten description: Mr. E.R. Thomas special F boat on small island at mouth of Miami River near Royal Palm Park & Hotel. Engine is out and being worked on by Dick Morgan, my old mechanic of 1916-17. The year was probably 1918-19. I recognize the ailerons on both top and lower wings, which I ordered specially, as well as Mahogany on lower part of hull and Port Orford cedar top side, with beautiful kapok stuffed pigskin seats and upholstery. I do not recall who got boat after Mr. Thomas purchased R.W. Judson's Triplane F - 5-place boat with Curtiss-Kirkham 12 cyl. Model K with with herring bone reduction gears 3-5 and 4 blade prop which he used at Palm Beach season of 1919-20 with me as pilot. H.D. Kantner 1973 Kantner 57

Thanks TLV 1970 From the text it is pretty clear that E R Thomas did not build the aircraft, unless we have an unknown Curtiss production line of F-boats in his factory/factories. The way I see it he has bought a Curtiss F-boat (they must have been surplus if ex Navy). It also confirms my belief it is a Curtiss model F we are looking at. Kantner also confirms it is being worked upon by his old time mechanic, and also his own restoration/modification skills. Even more interesting is the confirmation of the Curtiss Judson Triplane which appears in countless photos. Always nice to get that confirmed as well. I wonder if Thomas bought it from Kantner or Judson? Probably Kantner only served as a pilot as he states. How come you are in posession of the flip side of this photo? Are there more texts written by Kantner on other photos of his? Before the appearance of this album, Kantner was very much an unknown figure to me. Not listed by Aerofiles, and the internet only brings up a short story about him in Early Birds. I believe he deserves to be much more known in the US aviation history especially since he manufactured more aircraft than is previously known. Stig
