Laura Spelman Rockefeller's head is huge in this photo. It does look like a head/hat was edited onto that body, especially when viewed close up. I downloaded the image, saw a blurry section above her head, and a white section around the right side of her face, and saw that his face and coat had been hand-outlined also. Possibly she had a blurred face, and the newspaper wanted a clear shot of her to publish? I did find another image online of this same train trip. She has on the same or a very similar dress coat. Alberto Santos-Dumont was a Brazilian aviation pioneer, who designed, built, and flew the first practical dirigible balloons. Winning the Deutsch de la Meurthe prize on October 19, 1901, on a flight that rounded the Eiffel Tower, made him one of the most famous people in the world during the early 20th century.

Thanks Wystan for the links to the articles, and for determining the date, which will add some certainty to the image. We'll add that to the record the next time we update it. I'm still not sure what we are looking at in this image: a freight car built to hold and transport the stone?

No, that appears to be a gigantic stoneboat, perched on rollers, with a massive framework surrounding the stone, probably to prevent accidental breakage or chipping while in transit. The stories suggest that it was Rockefeller's plan to move the stone in one piece, and to have it carved into an ornamental fountain on the site. The words "George Brown & Co., N. Y.," have been painted on the sides of the wooden cribbing that surrounds and protects the stone.
