Christopher "Christy" Mathewson (August 12, 1880 – October 7, 1925), nicknamed "Big Six", "The Christian Gentleman", or "Matty", was an American right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball. What I think is amazing is that he won 373 games in just 17 seasons, still tied for the most lifetimes wins in the NL with Grover Alexander. During WWI, he was accidentally gassed with mustard gas and damaged his lungs, leaving him open to TB. He never was the same after that.

Though the date on the negative is February, 1914, there was of course no baseball being played then. Based on this photo titled "World Series" it is likely from the preceding October's World Series in New York:


The 1914 notation should be changed as a result.

artolog, Thanks for your comment. I agree this photo is likely from the previous World Series, based on the other photo you linked. We can make a note to that effect, but will retain the date of the negative as well, since that offers information about the use of the photograph. Mathewson was in the news in February and March of 1914 as he was deciding between continuing with New York or taking a job with the Federal League.

For some unknown reason i became a Giant fan in 1947 at the tender age of 13. There was a baseball board game called All Star Baseball Game,made by Cadaco Inc. The boys in my neighborhood could afford the $i.50 it took to buy the game buy selling soft drink bottles for 2cents apiece back to the mom and pop grocery stores,and pooling our money. I think there were 5 of us kids. I picked last from the roster of major league stars. All the big names had been picked.Babe Ruth,Lou Gehrig,Joe Dimaggio,Stan Musial and Ted Williams. The one player that was left that i really thought looked pretty good was Johnny Mize. He was a giant and i not only picked him but every other Giant player in that board game. My catchers were Roger Bresnahan,and Walker Cooper. Joining Mize at first base was Bill Terry. Frankie Frisch was at 2nd. Fred Lindstrom was at the hot corner,and my outfield was Bobby Thomson,Willard Marshall,and for some reason i cant remeber the other or my shortstop. Christy Mathewson and Carl Hubbell headed my pitching staff. It was a mixture of all time greats and current 1947 stars. That 1947 year the real Giants finished 5th. Then in '48 they were 4th. 1949 saw them in 3rd and 1950 they were second to the Phillies whiz Kids. 1951 was my year. At the end of that season the Giants were tied for first with the hated Dodgers. Then in the last playoff game Bobby Thomson hit the homerun that sent them to the worls series. I hope you enjoyed my trip down memory lane.
