The [New York] Sun., July 28, 1918, Section 4 Pictorial Magazine, Image 32, bottom left. chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83030431/1918-07-28/ed-... has a similar picture that looks to have the same children and the ice cream cones. It was taken at the "recent Islip Horse Show." Names are given but it's a little hard to figure out which names belong to the children on the wall and which to the older women. Hollins, Belmont, Potts, and Morgan families are represented. The sun., July 21, 1918, Section 7, Page 6 chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83030431/1918-07-21/ed-... indicates that the show was held on July 20, 1918.

I think I have the Hollins family sorted out. Three of the children on the wall appear to be grandchildren of Harry Bowly Hollins (1854-1938)

My conclusions: At left is Bobby (Robert) with cousin Gerald next to him. Gerald's sister Faith comes next. Bobby's older sister, Hope, is in a nearby photo on her pony Pebbles.

The caption for the similar photo in the New York Sun of July 28, 1918 lists Anita and Polly Potts www.archives.com/1940-census/polly-potts-ny-62626732 suggests that Polly would be the youngster second from the right on the wall. Anita was the name of Polly's mother, but I suspect the women in the picture are older sisters, given no "Mrs." in the captions. A 1920 Social Register books.google.com/books?id=ek5IAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA563&l... indicates an Islip residence for Mrs. Rockhill B Potts, the former Anita Tone. New York Evening Post of April 16, 1930 fultonhistory.com/newspaper%2011/New%20York%20Evening%20P... indicates that Mrs. Rockhill Brevoort Potts did have a daughter called Anita, whose engagement she was announcing. Back in those days ice cream was big treat. Not kids got enjoy such a pleasure. I remember my dad telling me when he was a child, they only went to town once a week and how he looked forward to the weekend so he could get a coke and the store.

I'm the age of the then-little boy foremost in the photo, and remember exactly as no_sweatt has described above...with one change: my dad would get a cold mug of root beer at the drugstore soda fountain. At only a nickel, it was twice the size of their cokes and half the price. To this day I remain alert for the five-cent root beers and three-dollar motorists' cabins of those days.
