[http://www.flickr.com/photos/51979177@N02] I note a date of 1695 on the photo, would this be correct? although I hardly think they would have added an incorrect date way back then...

Paul Vandenberg No, that is the plate number of the photographer. It is about 1893 when the warehouse was built (see note top right).

The building under construction over to the right is Holdsworth & Macpherson's George St emporium (at 252 George St per the old numbering system)...looks like they're putting on the roof and building the tower...which was topped with a rather nice looking cupola. Part of the building survives today as George Patterson House. Various digitised newspaper items indicate that Holdsworth & Macpherson's emporium was completed (or at least substantially completed) by ca. September 1894...this is when they appear to have moved in... trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/162835435 - Sydney Mail, 20th October, 1894...report on a fire at 'the newly-erected warehouse of Messrs Holdsworth, Macpherson and Co'... This later pic of Bridge St shows Holdsworth & Macpherson's emporium as it appeared when completed www.flickr.com/photos/powerhouse_museum/3593604317/ trove.nla.gov.au/work/188533214 - this ca. 1912 NLA Fairfax pic shows a fragment of Holdsworth & Macpherson's emporium...part of the Southern side plus the cupola...
