John Burns and Cottage, Gettysburg

    John L. Burns, a 70 year old veteran of the War of 1812, joined Union soldiers opposing the Confederate advance into Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. Wounded at least three times, he became a local celebrity and accompanied President Abraham Lincoln to church in November on the occasion of the dedication of the Gettysburg soldiers' cemetery. Up the lane in the extreme right of the photograph can be seen the photographer's wagon and portable darkroom tent.

    Robert Wilson in "Mathew Brady, Portrait of a Nation," identifies Brady in this picture, seated on the right side porch steps, in his signature hat.

    Brady appeared in an identical view, however that's very likely Anthony Berger on the steps at right, in this photo taken by Brady operator, David Woodbury.

    "Let His Loyalty and Devotion be a Lesson to Us All" Bobby was a Skye Terrier whose master, John Gray, died in 1858. Bobby was so devoted to his master that for fourteen years Bobby lay on the grave in Greyfriars Cemetery , leaving only for food. Baroness Angelia Georgina Burdett-Coutts, President of the Ladies Committee of the RSPCA, visited Edinburgh on several occasions to see Bobby. The Baroness received permission from the City Council to erect a granite fountain with a statue of Bobby on top by the graveyard as a lasting memorial to the loyal little terrier Bobby.
