This pic is taken at Gravelly Point Park in Arlington, VA. We'd love to have it added to the group Arlington, VA before 1990.

One of my favorite spots in the world (unashamed city boy) from my childhood - remember biking there many times from my parents' home in Ballston. Even though we live a couple of hours away, I have taken my kids there several times over the years.

Citizens of Arlington, Virginia Are Warned to Avoid All Contact with the Polluted Potomac River. This Sign Advises Immediate Medical Attention If Prolonged Exposure Occurs. 08/1972

  • Ken Mayer said:
The sign in the photo says Alexandria, so I believe the catalog data is wrong. Presumably the error came from the erroneous original caption? I'd like to tag this with the correct info, but tagging is disabled.
  • The U.S. National Archives said:
Thanks for this comment, Ken! Very good eye for spotting "Alexandria" on that sign in the Potomac River. Arlington and Alexandria are so close together on the Potomac it would be hard to determine exactly where the photo was taken and the location of the sign. Perhaps others can weigh in with thoughts and opinions. Also, we corrected the tagging restrictions on this photo set and you should now be able to add tags. Jerry (U.S. National Archives)
