"Nan is already a spoiled child" wonder what that meant to the source of the line?

More about "spoiled" Anna J. Gallant (1902-1936): sevensteeples.com/gallant1.html She was mother to Maurice Roy Sears (1920- 1985), and wife to Carroll Ernest Sears (married 1922). She only lived to age 34, but there are photos of her as an adult, on the fourth page of the same website: sevensteeples.com/gallant4.html

pennylrichardsca (now at ipernity) That's a great story, thanks for finding it. After seeing this poster from Hines: I'm thinking that perhaps the "spoiled" description is not the modern definition of spoiled by pampering, but a more general sense of decayed, or marred, induced by the soul-deadening work.

According to a contemporary pediatrics textbook I have, infant mortality in NYC tenements was >10% in the summer time, and 80% of that was due to diarrheal illnesses. That is presumably what prompted this charity.
