awww life is written all over his face ... still, I discovered one of my own ancestors in late 1879 was charged in the Old Bailey for "feloniously and carnally knowing and abusing Florence SERGENT a girl under 12 years" in his later years and I bet he looked just as world weary. Sort of creepy finding that in your family!

Also - it's interesting how flat caps have shrunk over the years. Nowadays they're barely more than a baseball cap but back then the rain wouldn't have touched your shoulders never mind your head!

I'm afraid I'm no help here, I've scanned the crowd looking for similar shawls but few tartan and no faces that seem to resemble the other ladies. There is a brief reference to the market in the Galway Advertiser as in www.advertiser.ie/galway/article/35364 but not sure if it was the same photograph as that does not come up.

If you went there today (especially as the schools are off) you'd probably find some kids drinking flagons and being sick.

Swordscookie No help?! That's a brilliant link! If it wasn't this photo that the Galway Advertiser was describing, then it was one that's almost the same...
