At the opening in October 1829, admission was by ticket only. However, such a multitude assembled at the front of the building which prevented many of the ticket-holders from getting in, including "the Marquis of Donegal and a great many very respectable Ladies and Gentlemen". Nevertheless, two thousand two hundred people managed to get in to hear the Rev. Henry Cooke preach. (from the account in Londonderry Sentinel - Saturday 24 October 1829)
