I wonder what course that was, there seems to be a high number of women grads for the time?
  • National Library of Ireland on The Commons said:
Absolutely, Sarah, so hoping someone might spot a familiar face that might allow us to narrow it down...

    Great shot

Several different hoods being worn, these are graduates from several degree courses.

There is a reference to UCD conferring on Page 3 of the Irish Times of Monday July 17th, but it's behind a paywall. Ditto Page 2 of the Indo that Monday. And the Sunday Indo of the 16th, page 2.

A soft day thank God!

Cornerstone laying 6/7/11; N.M. Butler; Seth Low (LOC)

  • Wystan said:
Photo bears date June 7, 1911, as does the cornerstone itself: www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/2163478442/in/p... The gentlemen identified by name are Nicholas Murray Butler, president of Columbia University, and Seth Low, former Columbia president and former Mayor of New York City, who in 1911 was chairman of Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. The son of a wealthy China trader, Low had donated the Low Memorial Library to Columbia University, naming it for his father.
  • Anne (LOC P&P) said:
Wystan: Thanks for bringing our attention to the date on the negative, and for the more complete information about Butler and Low. We'll add these to the record next time we update.
