The first of the bronze bas-reliefs added to the Art Gallery facade was 'Phryne before Praxiteles', by Percival Ball...which was unveiled on 27th March, 1903... www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/collection/works/3257/ trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/14562686 - SMH, 28th March, 1903...item on the unveiling... The second bas-relief added was 'Assur Natsir Pal, King of Assyria', by Gilbert Bayes...it was unveiled on 18th February, 1907...it inhabits the niche 2nd left of 'Phryne before Praxiteles'...as you can see, in this PHM pic the niche is vacant...www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/collection/works/3257/ trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/14837241 - SMH, 19th February, 1907...item on the unveiling... So the date range for this pic is 1903-07... Just for interest...before going to London to have 'Phryne before Praxiteles' cast in bronze, Ball evidently made two plaster casts of the work...one white (to imitate marble) and the other coloured (to imitate bronze)...which were then displayed side by side in the niches at the front of the Art Gallery, to help the trustees decide whether to opt for marble or bronze.
