In a film now being shown there is a picture entitled "What the Stay-at-homes are Doing." The first part shows the quaint Norwegian wheel going, while Australia's golden fleece is being spun for our soldiers socks. Miss Bennett sat for this picture lesson on spinning. In the second part the two school girls who are spinning are from the Bondi S.P. School, selected by the Under Secretary for the first spinning class held in a school in Australia. Right royally teachers and senior girls took advantage, learning to spin and buying their own wheel. Then there is a knitter who sits calmly at work on her sock. When the war started very few girls in Australia could knit socks. She, like other noble workers gave up many interests in order to organise classes and teach girls to knit. The knitter is Miss McPherson, slster of the late Major McPherson, who fell in the gallant charge of the 18th Battalion. ...

I get completely lost with old Pyrmont / Ultimo, but managed to find a constant here - the Gilbert Free Stores (built 1888) are still there at the north corner of Murray and Pyrmont Streets - a very handsome building - GoogleMapsStreet View goo.gl/maps/7Yk8i . Now a boutique hotel called '1888' www.1888hotel.com.au/ . The 1888 Gilberts warehouse was behind the photographer here - ... and is the orange building here (not the one with the spire - yet to be id'd) on the 1888 bird's eye - But I cannot get the outline of the old Goldsbrough Mort warehouse (see left of frame in front of the Badgery one) to correspond with the 1935 fire - hmmm ... I think you are right re the long frame - another warehouse under construction near what is now the Novotel. I think the photographer was near what is now the Imax theatre on the east side of Darling Harbour, at the end of Bathurst Street - GoogleMapsStreetView - goo.gl/maps/SJg0J

Aha! How about this - it's much earlier than I thought - c.1920. The long frame under construction we see turned into this building near Pyrmont Bridge thankfully dated 30/10/22 - investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/BOSImages/Series/0017/420... (thanks to [https://www.flickr.com/photos/51979177@N02] for the prompt). And so the extra upper three floors of the OLD Goldsborough Mort warehouse had not yet been added (that happened in 1923). Q.E.D. ?
