She had already been a floating museum since 1891. The description of content.lib.washington.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=... , a 1915 photo taken in Seattle, suggests that Smith owned the ship. home.gci.net/~alaskapi/success/ has a more detailed timeline and confirms that Smith was an owner and was from Indiana.

    A few corrections to the above. The man pictured here wearing a British naval uniform was Dave Smith. He was an American salesman and, needless to say, did not take the ship across the Atlantic, but went by steamer. The real skipper was a Canadian. Such is the power of the press.     If you were very naughty, you might be asked to remove your clothing and climb inside this vertical coffin, where of course it was pitch dark, there was no water, and fresh air was scarce. Then the box (which was clad in sheet iron) would stand in the hot sun until you got nice and warm. But you wouldn't want to slump or faint, because then your bare flesh might get snagged on the ends of the long nails that had been pounded into it from random directions . . . .
