" When Hugh Deviney became Park Ranger, after World War I, he and his sisters lived at the kiosk. The four Diveney sisters ran a successful catering business, selling home-smoked hams and home-baked cakes and pastries. For many local people, a special outing was the walk-up the mountain to the kiosk for an afternoon tea with sandwiches and scones. The Divenys were hosts to many VIPs, including the Duke and Dutches of York, who were later to be crowned King George VI and Queens Elizabeth. Two war veterans on horseback met them at the Reserve's gates and escorted them, one on either side of the car, to the kiosk, where Bille Deviney presented them with a bouquet of gum tips and Texas grass. The royal couple inspected the viewing dial and took tea in the kiosk. Brisbane's Mayor William Jolly took every opportunity to promote Brisbane and its tourist attractions. Albert Victor Drury (1837-1907), a public servant, was born on 28 August 1837 in Brussels. Albert was educated in Brussels and reared in an atmosphere of close familiarity with people in high places. In 1855-61 he was a clerk in the War Office, London, and in 1862 went to Queensland to join his elder brother, Edward Robert. Albert began work in the Colonial Secretary's Office and in January 1867 was the fourth to be appointed clerk of the Executive Council of Queensland, a post he held for a record term of over thirty-seven years. He was a prominent figure in government circles and enjoyed the friendship of governors, premiers and many ministers of the Crown, and moved with them in the highest stratum of colonial society. The lonely bachelor, (Sir) William Cairns, thought so highly of him that after his return to England he sent £300, insisting that Drury should visit him there. By virtue of his experience, ability and tact he became the confidant of those he served from the fourth ministry in 1866-67 to the twenty-second in 1903-04. The Imperial Service Order was conferred on him in 1903. Drury was something of an unofficial historian and kept many scrapbooks of newspaper cuttings, photographs, invitations, menus and other memorabilia relating to royalty and its representatives, governments and politicians. This collection, now in the Oxley Memorial Library, is a valuable source of reference to government activities and personalities. Drury retired in 1904 and died at his home in Brisbane on 6 September 1907, survived by his wife Mary, née Pring, whom he had married on 28 March 1864, and by four of their six children. Strelow &searchLimits= Strelow has a nice style for the standing block, although the nearside scarf hasn't been properly cleared before change over and the town shoes are a bit risky; as is the pre-war practice of nailing the competition block to the top of a dummy log.

Woodchopping (also spelled wood-chopping or wood chopping), called woodchop for short, is a sport that has been around for hundreds of years in several cultures. In woodchopping competitions, skilled contestants attempt to be the first to cut or saw through a log or other block of wood. It is often held at state fairs and agricultural shows. Participants (especially men) are often referred to as axemen. The modern sport of woodchopping is said to have had its genesis in 1870 in Ulverstone, Tasmania, as the result of a £25 ($50) bet between two axemen as to who could first fell a tree.[1] An alternative origin story comes from 16th century Basque Country, in which a man ran a marathon and chop ten logs to be allowed to propose to his future wife.[2] The world's first woodchopping championship was held in 1891, at Bell's Parade, Latrobe, Tasmania.[3] This event was celebrated and commemorated with the selection of the site to be the home of the Australian Axemen's Hall of Fame and Timberworks.
