Frederick Lawless, a brother of the writer, naturalist, and historian Emily Lawless, with whom she was very close, was the last heir to the estate, after their elder brother Valentine died without a male heir in 1928. But his occupancy was short-lived, as Frederick himself died on 18 July 1928, and the title was extinguished.

University College, Dublin (UCD), purchased the Lyons Estate in 1963, the purchase consisting of Lyons House and approximately 1,200 acres (490 ha). In the early 1990s, the university sold the house and half of the land, approximately 620 acres. It was purchased by Ryanair businessman Tony Ryan in 1996.

UCD have more details:
on his death the Barony and Baronetcy of Cloncurry became extinct and Lyons Estate passed to Valentine’s youngest daughter, Kathleen Emily Marie Lawless (1888-1957). Kathleen bequeathed the remaining property to a cousin, G. M. V. Winn.

Land at the heights of Bowen Hills, which provided fine views and cooling breezes, was eagerly purchased by Brisbane’s wealthier citizens. Substantial houses were built on the hilltop and surrounding slopes, including ‘Cintra House’ (1865), ‘Folkstone’ (the 1860s), and ‘Montpelier’ (1860s). Further subdivisions in the 1870s brought new settlers to the area, again primarily to the elevated sites known as Montpelier Hill or Bowen Hill Crest. Lower-lying land was flood prone and remained poorly developed in the nineteenth century, though some industry was opened along the banks of Breakfast Creek and the Brisbane River.
