The East Water Tower is a heritage-listed water tower at 17 Sussex Street, Bundaberg East, and is a must-visit as it is believed to be the only circular brick tower in Queensland. Given Bundaberg's relatively flat terrain, this tower is the perfect example of late 19th-century technology - using the increased water pressure provided by the tower in order to allow the reticulated water system to flow through efficiently. History of the tower More than 160 Bundaberg residents had the rare chance to take in a rich part of local history when they toured the East Water Tower as part of National Water Week. Eager history buffs were ready to take in the sights of the tower, which usually only opened to the public one day a year for the Open House event. The tower was commissioned on 19 September 1902 by Queensland Government hydraulic engineer JB Henderson. “I know a little about the tower, but I didn’t realize there were so many signatures inside on the walls, that was a surprise, and I saw one signature dated the year it was made in 1902.” The building provided Bundaberg’s first reticulated water supply and was originally known as the Bundaberg Waterworks. The imposing structure, which is now a hallmark of the Bundaberg city skyline, comprised a 40,000-gallon steel tank on top of an 8.8-meter diameter, 32-meter high cylindrical brick tower. Combined with the 182 kilolitre capacity steel tank the tower has a total height of 35.5 meters. The heritage-listed East Water Tower has kept its internal history alive with solid wood stairs that turn all the way to the seventh floor, glass pane arched windows, and the floor is lined with sediment of dust that helps show the decades of hard work of the older generations. Reaching the top floor, the steel water tank is the center of everyone’s attention, as the tour guide explained the water tank was fully riveted with zero welds to help hold in the water. “There were 140 steps on the way up and 140 on the way down, so 280 altogether,” Archie said with pride. The four story brick and stone Salvation Army's People's Palace on the corner of Ann and Edward Streets in the city in Brisbane, was opened by Commissioner Hay on 28 June 1911. Salvation Army commander Major Booth gained support for a Brisbane People's Palace a place for the reclaiming of fallen humanity and providing shelter for the homeless, after his public lecture on "Social salvation" . Originally modelled on the success of the Sydney People's Palace, the Brisbane building evolved to provide affordable accommodation for working class travelling people. With 130 bedrooms and a rooftop garden capable of seating 200 people The Brisbane Courier reported the Palace as "fitted with all the very latest conveniences for the comfort of residents. The three-course lunch from 12 o'clock to 2 p.m. for 1/ should satisfy the most fastidious epicure". (Thursday 6 July 1911, page 5) Designed by Lieutenant-Colonel Saunders, the Salvation Army's architect and secretary for property affairs, it became popular with travellers to Brisbane due to its proximity to Central Railway Station.
