The monument commemorates poet George Essex Evans (1863 - 1909). Annual pilgrimages used to be made to this monument. Evans was born in London in 1863, emigrated to Australia in 1881 working initially as a farmer and later as a teacher, journalist and Toowoomba`s Registrar of Births Deaths and Marriages. He contributed articles to numerous journals and newspapers, particularly The Queenslander, for which he wrote as `Christophus`. Two of his books of verse were published, in 1891 and 1897. In 1901 he won the Commonwealth Poetry award for his " Ode for Commonwealth Day." Some finality has been reached respecting the Essex Evans Memorial, which it is proposed to erect in Toowoomba, The design has been accepted by the Toowoomba committee, and the work is to be carried out by Mr. Bruce, monumental mason, Toowoomba. The total cost is to be £106/10. The monument will be erected in Webb Park, Toowoomba, on the Main Range, overlooking the deceased's late home on Toll Bar road. Cairns Post (Qld), 30 September 1912. Captain Arthur Henry Evans MD FRCS is shown as 'seconded' wef 2nd August 1917 [LG of 1st November 1918] but with no other detail. He evidently had a close association with 4th London General Hospital as on 1st December 1908 (aged 36) he was Gazetted Captain RAMC and assigned to that Hospital as an officer whose "services will be available on mobilisation". After the war he was 'restored to the Establishment wef 30th October 1920, to serve at 4th London General Hospital, but was effectively 'Retired' from the Army wef 30th September 1921, having attained the age limit for Regular Service. [LG 26th January 1923]. In the 1930s Arthur Evans OBE MS MD FRCS became a medical expert on alcoholism and inebriety, and later (1938) President of The Medical Society. It appears that Arthur Henry Evans was born in 1872 (possibly at Bromyard, Avenbury, in Herefordshire). He died in Surrey aged 78.//

The family employed a Nurse, a Cook, a Parlour Maid, a House Maid and a Kitchen Maid. An onlne family tree shows that his wife's name was Dorothy Briant (1887-1983) and he was the son of Samuel Evans (1839-1915) and Sarah Ann Davies (1840). In 1881 they lived at 27 London Road in Neath maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf... where Samuel Evans was an Ironmonger. By 1891 Arthur was a Medical Student. HIs father was a Master Ironmonger. The family home was at 2 Park Road, Neath. Samuel was a successful businessman. When he died in 1915 his estate was valued at £4393 and he lived at Wyndcliffe, Gnoll Road, Neath. In 1901 Arthur was based in Liverpool and described as East (?) Dispensary Doctor, living alone at 158 Richmond Row.

Arthur Leslie Evans, son of Arthur Alfred Evans and Constance Mary Evans of 45 Forest Drive East, Leytonstone, London. No identifiable remains were recovered from the Somme battlefield. There is a memorial gravestone to him in the City of London Cemetery at Manor Park, Essex (presumably raised by his parents). On Thursday 20th July 1916 2nd Battalion Suffolks were fighting at Delville Wood near the village of Longueval having come forward in the morning with 76th Brigade to relieve South Africans from a brigade in 9th Division. Amongst numerous casualties suffered by 2nd Suffolks on that day, particularly in X and Y Companies, was 37-year-old Sergeant Arthur Page from Annesdale, Ely.
