" . . . The welcome Itself was short - and may have been sweet for all that one could hear. From the stands It was hard to realize that anything was happening. A cluster of gentlemen on the red carpet between white pillars, the wide green sweep of the park, the dark, silent battalions massed in front; the great dark trees behind; a man in a felt hat, out in the front of everyone, hanging for dear life on to a tripod and grimly working what seemed a maxim gun, and was a cinematograph, A wide platform, with about 20 cameras like long-logged, weak-jointed flamingoes craning their inquisitive necks over the troops; three or four photographers with their tripods under their arms bolting down the sacred lawn; and a grimy fox terrier scratching his ribs under the very rifles of the guard of honour . . . "
