Dr. Joseph Andrew Arratta was born in 1899 in Mount Morgan. He was the sixth child in a family of ten, the son of a San Francisco born father and Tambo born mother. He attended school in Rockhampton at the Christian Brothers College and was Dux in 1916. He received one of only twenty university scholarships awarded to Queenslanders that year and in 1917 he began his medical studies at Sydney University. He graduated in 1922 and was a resident at Sydney Hospital until 1924. The following year, Dr. Arratta applied for a position as the Government Medical Officer at Muttaburra in central-west Queensland. Death of Dr. Gillespie j POPULAR GOULBURN MEDICO With the passing of Dr. Arthur Paul Gillespie, Goulburn lost one of its best loved citizens. For some time past Dr. Gillespie had not had the best of health, and latterlv it was realised his state of health was critical. He was unelp of Matron Gillespie, of the Wagga District Hospital, who was with him some days before he 'ILd and was pre sent at his funeral. Dr. Gillespie was a Goulburn man; he was born there and went back to live and practise his profession there, out wherever he may have come from those who knew him would have learned to hold him in the high regfird to which we have referred. He rs a likeable man as well as a doctor. He had a genial, happy nature, and was always in optimistic mood. He nad a keen understanding of human nature, and was full of stories of real life haoueninrs. H' was a raconteur of the highest order, and none of his stories were unkindly. In the days be fore radio played such an Important1 part in our lives whenever there was an election result to be post' out side this office, Dr. G'-Wnie was a visitor, and with his wealth of Goul burn lore and stories was host in him self, in whlling away the time be tween file reception of results. Dr. Gil lespie's work among the poor was well known, and there are many in Goul burn indebted to him for his services F'or those services he had no other reward than the satisfaction of help In^ those who were on the border line. Dr. Gillespie passed throueh the Sydney University at the same time as Dr. Buchanan, formerly of Goulburn. and the two young men became firm friends in those days, a friendship which lasted unt:'I these days. Dr. Gil- 1 tesple, when, he came from the uni versity, went as a resident officer to Sydney Hospital, and Dr. Buchanan to Prince Alfred Hosoital. From Syd ney Hospital, Dr. Gillespie became an assistant to the late Dr. Walter Fisher, who at t'le time was .tioned at Cess nock, and on the death of Dr. M'Killop. in Goulburn. he took over the practice there. That was about 30 years ago. He was nsdical officer to the Goul burn Reformatory during the whole of his residence in Goulburn. an office iti which he succe^ed Dr. M'Killon and he wrs on the staff of the Goul burn Hospital during the whole of the period of his life there as a doctor. He had a happv maimer, which won him the goodwill of all who knew him. Whether as patients or friends. Wher ever he was, Dr. Gillespie was a good companion. He was for many yeais a member of tlie Goulburn Coif Club, and was also president of the club for tw years. Dr. Gillespie, until illness over took him, was a great billiard player, and there was no better known mem ber in the Mechanics' Institute billiard room than Dr. Gillespie- As elsewhere. Dr. Gillespie always took with him to the lighter side of life his spirit of bonhomie. Dr. Gillespie was a son of the late Mr. and. Mrs. Charles Gillespie, well kiiown citizens of Goulburn. He leaves a widow, who Is a daugh ter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Walter Fisher, and on: daughter, Mother Gil lespie (Betty), who is In the Convent of Sacred Heart, Rose Bay, and two sons, Roger and Desmond. Dr. Gillespie is also survived bv a brother, Mr. Frank Gillespie, of Cre morne, and two sisters. Miss A. Gil lespie, of Cremorne, and Mrs. J. F. Dwyer, of Mosman.
