Angel and Devils

    the angel is from the top of the South African War memorial in the Haymarket. This photo is from 1975 when she was taken away for restoration during the building of the Tyneside Metro station below. Now fully restored (with a new body and fibreglass wings!) she holds a sword in the left hand and a laurel garland in the right. In the background are the Plough public house, which closed in 1976, and the ABC Haymarket cinema. The whole block was demolished in 1985

    The elephant is holding up its foot to have its shoe fitted. If it were distressed I doubt if the man would be too keen on having its foot resting in his knee. It is probably one of Bostock's famous elephants which all had long happy lives, and were very well fed.

    Thw humans are sqauting uncomfortably, arduous labor to make an animals feet comfortsale. Wonder if they had decent wages and accomodations. Wonder if the humans were warm in winter and cool in summer tending to the animals.

    My colleague mentioned there are several photographs where scientists use hats during documentation to give a sense of proportion to the specimen photographed. She assumes this is a similar instance.

    Smithsonian Institution Thanks for the heads up! I'm going to read that article you linked to. I looked at the photo again and the hat does make a big difference! Modern cameras might not need that sort of thing sometimes but that's due to technological discoveries in photography. Thanks again!
