I had seen this one before somewhere, as a child I was a member of na Fianna but we were not nearly as pretentious as these lads. Stu has a name on the Schafer method - I can't remember the name of what the second lad is doing but it was the method used where the arms were moved vigorously about and pressed into the solar plexus to do the same thing. The swords were probably more in order in that era, we did not have access to them.

There is a small hillock in Merrion Sq. but the considerable structure on the far left causes confusion. Small mounds like this can be removed and rebuilt quite easily I suppose. The number of windows and chimney pots on the houses might just provide a starting point for investigation.

Sharon Devine commented 5 years ago on this image (before the Marys took over) and had some news for us. She showed the image to her mother who was 82 at the time and she was pretty sure (99%) that the prisoner in the photo was her grandfather. His name may have been Peter Grant and it would be fantastic if it turned out that we could confirm the identification and get some more detail! I sent a Flickr mail to Sharon but after 5 years she may no longer be active on Flickr?

The above photograph shows Countess Markievicz and senior Fianna officers Theo Fitzgerald (Assistant Director of Training and Organisation) and Thomas McDonald (Waterford O/C) in 1917. According to Patrick Hearne, Waterford Vice-Commandant, Markievicz was invited down to Waterford to give lectures to the local Fianna Sluagh. Hearne recalled that Markievicz “lectured in the City Hall on the 1916 [Rising]. She was accompanied by Theo Fitzgerald. Afterwards a banquet was held at the Metropole Hotel”.

Great pic of a truly great woman

I'm a non-violence hippy type but she does look cool with her extravagant hat and gun. There should be a hollywood action movie about her life. I could just see Angelina Jolie in the lead role. :)
