  I suspect that some of my grand uncles may be in this photo or then again they may have been on a different shift. They lived at Anvil Creek and Greta.

  Tuesday 3 July 1888. At the time there were serious mining strikes in the Newcastle area. Police and military were involved. Argus (Melbourne) 4/7/1888 - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/6893512

The first coal train from the West Wallsend colliery passed through Newcastle to Bullock Island yesterday. The occasion was marked by a general display of bunting.

The colliery is about 15 miles from Newcastle, the company's property comprising 3000 acres of freehold land, with coal seams on all four sides. The works and machinery are said to be of the most improved pattern.
