I was wrong, it is across the street on the NW corner of Castlereagh and King streets. Where the MLC Centre now is See street name note and shadows.

Such a travesty that this gorgeous building was knocked down to build the MLC Centre... What were they thinking?

I've heard so many reminiscences of the Australia Hotel, so it's finally great to see it.

I know ... its so awful the things that were knocked down in Sydney in the name of progress ... the Metropole Hotel, the original Wentworth and countless other buildings big & small ... but that's the way of things I suppose!

@ 56m to dome, in 1891, it was Australias tallest building! even taller then the 12storey APA Building in melbourne! it had 3storeys added in 1921 to keep up with demand and by late 1960's . it looked tired and outdated. all it needed was a refurb and removal of 3 storeys from 1921 and would have made a suberb boutique unit block. but alas, harry seidler didnt have it in his plans for MLC centre and it bit the dust in 1971. sad loss indeed.

Is the tower the same as this one in Barrack St from the Powerhouse Museum collection? I'm trying to work out angles. If it's the same tower it looks like the current 83 Castlereigh St is further to the south from where this was taken.

Paul, I think you're right., the top of the tower looks the same in both images, doesn't it. I think the location of some street numbers have been known to change/move over time.

Hi! There are two things worthy of comment about this image. Firstly, was there an opera house in Sydney at the time? Secondly, is 'Opera House Hotel' a previous name, as I notice the name 'Simcock's Hotel' on a window, where the original name would have been easier to replace? Question for State Records: are you interested in a quality image of the floral clock at Taronga Zoo with the Harbour Bridge in the background, circa mid-1930s? If so, please advise where to upload.
