There had been an earlier 1st Hussars regiment in the King's German Legion of the British Army during the Napoleonic War, but I haven't found a 1st Hussars. Perhaps the postcard caption has a typo.

Googling: The JFK Dunbrody festival seems to be held every July. JFK visited in 1963, and The Dunbrody is a replica famine ship. I don't know what the New Ross summer festival was called in 1972, but something with JFK in the name is a good bet!

Indeed, if you go to that google maps link above and turn around, you'll see the statue of JFK unveiled by his sister in 2008!

Pity the shot wasn't taken when the big drum was in view as the name of the band is traditionally put up on that! A Scottish band is unlikely and the one thing I can say categorically is that it was not the Limerick Pipe band as their kilts were traditional Irish saffron! The New Ross Pipe Band was formed in 1974 so it ain't them either.

On the Royal Welch Fusiliers website Fermoy is mentioned repeatedly. "On the 24th August 1887 the 2nd Battalion moved from Fermoy to Galway, finding detachments at Castlebar, Oughterard and Gort. On the 2nd Battalion leaving the following complimentary 'resolution'was received from the Magistrates of Fermoy:- "Resolved: that we the Magistrates assembled at Fermoy Petty Sessions, beg to record our unanimous approval of the conduct of the Royal Welch Fusiliers while stationed here for the past two years, their (sic) not being, to the best of our recollection, a civil case against them during that period, and that our clerk be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Col. Williamson, in command of the regiment. Signed Geo Montgomery, Chairman Fermoy Petty Sessions, 12th September 1887 From reading through their site it appears that they left in 1887 and went to Galway where they remained for some time. As I remember it the big open field behind became the grounds of the aerodrome that was attached to the camp and used up to quite recently. The mighty Munster team that beat the New Zealand All Blacks in 1978 trained on that field in the run up to the historic match.
